House Beautiful: Do you entertain?

Designing to suit your lifestyle, whether you entertain frequently or cook only for your family, is the key to any successful kitchen. In this new house in Sarasota, Ronald G. Cook of Cook's Custom Cabinetry, also of Sarasota, created a kitchen that is efficient not only for dinners for two, but also for the home owners' dinner parties for as many as 50 guests.

Perry and Phyllis Mohlar, an empty-nester couple, entertain often, and since both enjoy cooking, the designer made sure their new kitchen could accommodate two chefs, a host of kitchen equipment, dinnerware, and glassware - plus guests.

In the center of the 325 sq ft kitchen is a work island, which Cook designed from the same Wood-Mode cabinetry specified throughout the kitchen.

It contains a vegetable sink, a wine cooler, storage shelves and cupboards underneath. The cleanup station features generous expanses of countertop on either side of the double sink, and the cooking area encircles the island.

A separate butler's pantry provides additional storage and acts as a staging area between the kitchen and formal dining room. Decorative open shelving and glass-fronted cabinets allow the homeowners to display their collection of English antiques. And when the Mohlars have the house to themselves, they enjoy their meals in the sun-drenched breakfast room that flows out of the kitchen.
